DIY Self-Watering Fern Table Top Planter

Inspiration

In this week's video, I create an EPIC self-watering table top fern planter. The way that I came up with this was in part due to previous builds that I’ve done. However, the inspiration came the same way many other do… with a container.

Yes with a single container! A jar or tray serves as the canvas for my work (a lot of the time). Often when I’m trying to brainstorm ideas, I just go and look at my stockpile to see what come to mind. In this case, I had recently found a 12x12x2” Acrylic Tray at Target. This gave me huge inspiration!

Ferns

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love ferns. And while they're by no means difficult to care for, they can be somewhat temperamental. It turns out, or at least from what I've seen, that ferns thrive in an elaborate setup with flowing water. Not all ferns obviously, but one that immediately comes to mind is the Rabbit’s Foot Fern, Davallia fejeensis.

If you can situate their roots (not the fuzzy rhizome) on a rock with flowing water, then they seem to thrive. I’ve done it in a number of setups by now and it seems to always work.

The Build

So what may seem like a lot of work upfront, actually makes for an easy, low-maintenance setup long-term. Other than occasionally trimming the plants and topping off the water, it will require virtually no upkeep at all. Plus it look WAY cooler than a pot with plants in it. Don’t you think?

As always, be sure to watch the full tutorial video on my YouTube channel. Leave a like and subscribe if you don’t mind either.
